2009-2010 Season Opener

~ Esmeralda, Giselle - Act ii, Masquerade

The 2009-2010 season opens in spectacular fashion with a thrilling new version of Esmeralda inspired by Victor Hugo’s novel Notre Dame de Paris. The ballet tells the tragic tale of the hunchback Quasimodo and his love for the beautiful gypsy girl Esmeralda. Choreography is by former Ballet Tucson Resident Choreographer Mark Schneider.

Perhaps the most celebrated ballet of the Romantic era, Giselle is a dramatic portrayal of triumphant and transcendent love beyond the grave. Last presented in 2004, Ballet Tucson’s breathtaking revival of Act II shows the classical depth and artistry of the company.

To usher in the Halloween season, Ballet Tucson presents the premiere of Masquerade - a collaboration by Mary Beth Cabana (Founding Artistic Director) and Chieko Imada (Assistant Artistic Director). This new ensemble work is a striking blend of traditional and contemporary movement and evokes light-hearted, engaging human interactions and athletic exuberance.
