Season Opener 2010-2011

~ Jubilee, Graduation Ball, The Gift

Founding Artistic Director Mary Beth Cabana offers a mixed bill of three ballets specially selected to commemorate Ballet Tucson’s 25th anniversary season. To celebrate the occasion, John Gardner and Amanda McKerrow (Artistic Associates) present the premiere of The Gift. Set to lively classical music, this work explores the individuality of the company dancers through intimate ensemble work. The premiere of Jubilee is a look at the evolution of Ballet Tucson from talented student ensemble to fully professional company. Mendelssohn’s famous “Italian” symphony is the musical inspiration for this new collaboration by Cabana and Assistant Artistic Director Chieko Imada. Also on the program is the exuberant and charming Graduation Ball, a humorous ballet set in a finishing school in Old Vienna. Mischief ensues as young girls prepare to host the graduates from a nearby military academy. Comedic flirtations, romantic interludes, and Johann Strauss’ spirited music provide the background for this perennial favorite.
